The Ocean Race: Newport Stop Over

PEAK Structure Solutions Provides a Wide Range of Custom Temporary Structures for The Ocean Race: Newport Stop Over

Summary of Project

The project’s overarching purpose was to establish a vibrant race village for The Ocean Race Newport stopover. Utilizing its expertise and diverse tenting inventory, PEAK Structure Solutions, in tandem with Newport Tent Company and PEAK Event Services created a customized and multifaceted event experience.

Client Needs

To address the client’s requirements, a variety of structures were essential, each designed to serve specific functions during the event. These structures included the Hospitality Pavilion, offering guests an opportunity to purchase tickets for an elevated food and beverage experience. The Helly Hansen Pavilion was designated as the go-to location for all official Ocean Race merchandise, providing a hub for event-related items. The Sustainability Pavilion served as an engaging, interactive space aimed at educating visitors about the pressing need to protect the ocean. Lastly, the 11th Hour Pavilion functioned as an elevated area reserved for Newport’s home race team, 11th Hour, adding an exclusive touch to the event’s offerings.

Challenges

The project presented several unique challenges; for the Sustainability Pavilion, a crucial requirement was to create a completely blacked-out interior for a holographic experience while maintaining an exterior appearance consistent with the rest of the Race Village. Additionally, the varying elevations at Fort Adams, ranging from zero to 48 inches, posed a unique set of challenges for the tenting install teams. PEAK utilized scaffolding flooring to ensure level pavilions for the client.

SOLUTIONS

To overcome the challenges faced with the Sustainability Pavilion, PEAK implemented a creative solution. Two sets of tops were installed, with one set in white for the exterior and another in black to achieve the desired blacked-out interior. This approach was also applied to the gable ends and sidewalls.

Results + Takeaways

The project’s success was a result of close collaboration with local vendors, the community, and the client. PEAK’s ability to provide solutions that met the client’s needs, all while staying within a reasonable budget and considering sustainability and community impact, played a pivotal role in achieving the project’s goals

Unique Attributes

The project showcased unique elements, including the innovative use of double tops for the Sustainability Pavilion as well as the introduction of the event’s showpiece: a custom two-story structure built for Newport’s home team, 11th Hour Racing.
